Screen International are, very flatteringly, featuring me in an editorial piece called ‘Stars of Tomorrow’ which should be out in a few weeks.
The piece includes writers, directors and performers and I know a few of the guys and their work. Among the group is Tim Key whose stand up is brilliant and who I mentioned a while back for his hilarious work on ‘The One and Only Herb McGwyer plays Wallis Island’. There’s also Jonathan Van Tulleken, his fantastic horror ‘Off Season’ was BAFTA nominated alongside Mixtape. So I’m really proud to be mentioned in the same ball park as those guys.
As part of the article I was also very privileged to meet and interview Mike Newell yesterday. You may know his work, he has directed films and television for over 40 years including more recently Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Mona Lisa Smile, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire and new summer blockbuster Prince of Persia.
It was really illuminating to pick the brains of someone like Mike and he was a thoroughly lovely, eloquent and animated guy, a classic director from the old school; he addressed me as ‘old chap’.
Anyway I really grilled him good but you’ll have to wait for the results of that encounter…for now content yourself with some classic Mike Newell moments…
